NVIDIA and MediaTek Collaborate to Integrate Gaming and AI into Automotive Infotainment Systems.
NVIDIA Corp and MediaTek Inc. Announce Collaboration to Enhance Automotive Infotainment Systems with Advanced Video Streaming, Gaming, and AI Capabilities.
During the Computex technology trade show in Taipei, a partnership was revealed between MediaTek and NVIDIA. As part of the agreement, MediaTek will integrate an NVIDIA graphic processing unit chip let and software into their system-on-chips (SoCs) that are supplied to automakers for their infotainment displays.
The integration of NVIDIA software in MediaTek systems will ensure compatibility with automated driving systems powered by NVIDIA technology. This collaboration enables dashboard displays to showcase the vehicle's surroundings, while cameras monitor the driver for enhanced safety and convenience.
Speaking at a press conference in Taipei, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the importance of robust companies that can establish long-term partnerships with the automotive industry, acknowledging the industry's extended product cycle.
"The combination of our companies' expertise and market positions will provide strong foundations for automotive industry partners," he remarked. He further highlighted that the collaboration would offer versatile chips capable of powering various aspects across all car segments.
As automotive technology advances, in-vehicle displays and entertainment systems are evolving with the addition of features such as gaming, voice-activated AI, driver monitoring systems, and displays related to automated driving.
Qualcomm, a major competitor of MediaTek in the smartphone market, has also been actively pursuing partnerships with automakers. Qualcomm and Salesforce recently announced a joint venture to develop a new connected vehicle platform.
Through the collaboration with MediaTek, Nvidia aims to expand its reach in the $12 billion infotainment system-on-chip market. During the event, MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai revealed plans to introduce the first products by late 2025.
While Nvidia has primarily focused on premium automotive brands like Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar Land Rover, MediaTek has a strong presence in the Android smartphone chip sector. They offer their Dimensity Auto technology to more affordable mass-market vehicle lines and possess expertise in mobile connectivity and Android systems.
Danny Shapiro, NVidia’s Vice President of Automotive, acknowledged that MediaTek addresses segments that Nvidia has not previously targeted.
Although the companies did not disclose specific automotive customers, their collaboration opens up promising opportunities for future partnerships in the automotive industry.
